During the commencement speech at Morehouse College, an esteemed historical black college and the alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr., a few students chose to face away from President Joe Biden.

According to a post shared by a pro-Trump super PAC, there were at least three Morehouse graduates captured in photographs with their backs facing the camera. Notably, one of them was wearing a keffiyeh scarf, symbolizing support for Palestinians. The press pool accompanying Biden’s entourage confirmed witnessing a student who stood at the rear of the ceremony with his back turned and his right fist raised. The pool also mentioned that a small number of graduates and faculty members were seen wearing keffiyeh scarves.

Biden condemned Hamas’s assault on Israel in October as “vicious” and highlighted the “humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” urging for an “immediate ceasefire.” He also emphasized the importance of students’ voices being heard amidst the pro-Palestinian demonstrations occurring on college campuses.

“I support peaceful, non-violent protest. Your voices should be heard. And I promise you, I hear them,” he said.

Biden’s visit to Morehouse College was intended to strengthen his backing within the African American community, which is considered a crucial demographic for the Democratic Party, in preparation for the 2024 election. Recent surveys indicate a decline in Biden’s popularity among black voters.
