On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris employed a contrived southern accent while addressing auto workers in Detroit, Michigan. This choice of speech has sparked questions regarding the authenticity of her persona, as voters tend to be sensitive to politicians who appear disingenuous.

A notable instance of this was seen in 2016 when Hillary Clinton, a two-time unsuccessful presidential candidate, adopted a similar affected accent during her campaign, which ultimately culminated in her defeat by former President Donald Trump in a significant electoral upset.

You know the one thing about all of us is we like hard work. Hard work is good work. Hard work is good work,” Harris said with a twang.

“The thing that we like about hard work is we have fun doing hard work,” she said.

“Thank you to the sisters and brothers of UAW for all you are and all we will do over these next 89 days,” she said, “God bless you. God bless you”:
