Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris advocated for the abolition of the filibuster concerning the termination of unborn lives through abortion—a proposal that carries significant consequences for the distribution of power within the United States.

During an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio on Tuesday, Harris urged the Senate to abolish the legislative filibuster in order to enshrine the right to abortion and to repeal state-level pro-life legislation.

“I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe,” Harris said. “To actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.”

Her advocacy for the abolition of the filibuster represents a significant escalation in her commitment to federalize abortion should she secure election in November. Harris has consistently expressed her intention to endorse legislation aimed at reinstating Roe v. Wade, which was nullified by the Supreme Court in 2022, and has positioned the termination of pregnancies as a focal point of her campaign. She has notably refrained from specifying any abortion restrictions she would endorse and has inaccurately asserted that late-term abortions do not occur.

While Harris has previously advocated for the elimination of the filibuster, her rationale differed at that time. During her 2020 presidential campaign, she indicated her support for ending the filibuster to facilitate the passage of the Green New Deal, which is perceived as a comprehensive far-left agenda. In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News in July, National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT) cautioned that the Democrats harbor “radical” ambitions for the United States, which include the termination of the filibuster if they gain a majority in the Senate.

Abolishing the filibuster would reduce the threshold for passing legislation from 60 votes to a simple majority of 51, thereby allowing Democrats to swiftly implement their progressive agenda, Daines warned. This agenda, he noted, encompasses expanding the U.S. Supreme Court from nine to thirteen justices, granting statehood to Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico to add four Democratic senators, and executing a federal takeover of election processes nationwide.

“The consequences of losing right now are profound because, if we don’t take back the majority and the Democrats are in charge, they will blow up the filibuster,” Daines said.

Daines continued:

“That means D.C. and Puerto Rico are now states. That means four Democrat senators in perpetuity. They will also move the Supreme Court from nine to 13 Justices. They will pack the court. And last, they will pass one of their favorite bills — the left — and that’s the federal takeover of all the elections. Our Founding Fathers feared concentration of power. That’s one of the things about the separation of powers both in terms of the three branches of government but also the separation of powers between the federal government and the states, the principles of federalism. This bill would remove any voter ID laws that states have passed. It would be all mail-in ballots. They would have cutoffs on Tuesday night on election night at maybe 8:00 p.m. and have a long tail of maybe two weeks to get all the ballots in. You can see, we lose complete control of elections, and the left does irreparable harm to this country with a power grab that would make it very difficult to ever get a center-right government elected in Washington again.”
