During the initial vice presidential debate on Tuesday night, Republican Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio had his microphone silenced by CBS moderators while he sought to clarify statements regarding Haitian migrants being relocated to Springfield, Ohio.
In the course of the debate, CBS moderator Margaret Brennan posed questions to the candidates concerning illegal immigration. Vance raised concerns about the effects of migrants on American citizens, referencing the influx of approximately 20,000 Haitian migrants into Springfield, Ohio, over the last three years. Following a rebuttal from Walz, Brennan attempted to shift the discussion, asserting that the Haitian migrants possessed “legal status.” This prompted Vance to interject, contesting the network’s fact-checking policy and highlighting that the migrants had entered the country through asylum applications.
“Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status,” Brennan said.
“But Margaret … I think it‘s important to turn now to the economy. The rules were that you guys weren‘t going to fact-check, and since you‘re fact-checking me, I think it‘s important to say what‘s actually going on,” Vance responded. “So there‘s an application called the CBP One app — where you can go on as an illegal migrant, apply for asylum or apply for parole and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open border wand. That is not a person coming in applying for a green card and waiting for 10 years — ”
Brennan interjected to express his gratitude to Vance for his reply and sought to progress the discussion; however, Vance could be heard continuing his remarks, reproaching Harris for her involvement in the illegal immigration crisis.
