Republicans demanded President Joe Biden’s resignation from office after he announced the end of his reelection campaign on Sunday. Biden stated he would not seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in a post on X, and subsequently endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the nomination.

“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President,” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana posted on X. “He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”

Republican Senator J.D. Vance from Ohio, the vice-presidential nominee of the party, raised doubts about whether Biden should continue in office if he were to withdraw from the reelection race prior to Biden’s official statement.

“If Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign, how can he justify remaining President?” Vance said in a Sunday morning post. “Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief. There is no middle ground.”

Additional Senate Republicans have also echoed the demand for Biden to resign after he declared that he would not seek re-election for a second term.
