According to a recent survey conducted by the Economist/YouGov, the majority of Biden supporters are not backing President Joe Biden in the upcoming 2024 presidential election due to their admiration for him and his leadership. Instead, the survey revealed that their vote is primarily driven by opposition to former President Donald Trump. The survey, which indicated Trump leading Biden by two points among registered voters in a 2024 matchup that included third-party candidates, asked Biden supporters whether they are voting “FOR” Joe Biden or “AGAINST” Donald Trump.
A slight majority of 51 percent confessed that their vote is mostly “AGAINST” Trump, while 48 percent stated that they are mostly voting “FOR” the 81-year-old President. Additionally, the survey showed that the vast majority of independent voters planning to vote for Biden, 70 percent, are primarily voting “AGAINST” Trump rather than “FOR” Biden. The survey also posed the same question to respondents who expressed their intention to vote for Trump.
It was found that a significant majority of 67 percent are mostly voting “FOR” Trump. This indicates that most Trump supporters are not merely casting their vote as a protest against Biden, with only 32 percent stating that they are supporting Trump because they are mostly voting “AGAINST” Biden.
In contrast to the majority of independent voters who are backing Biden as a vote “AGAINST” Trump, a significant 62 percent of independents supporting Trump express their preference as a vote “FOR” the former president. Conversely, 35 percent of these independents state that their vote is primarily “AGAINST” Biden.
The survey also asked respondents, “Regardless of who you prefer, who do you think would win the presidential election if Joe Biden were the Democratic candidate and Donald Trump were the Republican candidate?”
41 percent of respondents believe Trump will win, while 34 percent think the same of Biden. An additional 25 percent are undecided. Interestingly, 42 percent of independents are undecided, with more leaning towards Trump winning at 37 percent compared to 21 percent for Biden. The survey was conducted from June 9-11, 2024, among 1,595 U.S. adult citizens. This comes as multiple polls indicate that the Manhattan jury’s guilty verdict in the contentious business records trial has not impacted the former president negatively, much to the disappointment of Democrats.
