President Joe Biden questioned the purpose of democracy when addressing students at Morehouse College in Atlanta, raising concerns about the killing of black men by law enforcement officers. However, a brief examination of police shootings in 2024 revealed that Biden’s comments were highly inaccurate.

“You started college just as George Floyd was murdered and their was a reckoning on race. It’s not to the wonder, the democracy you hear about actually works for you. What is democracy if black men are being killed in the street?” Biden said.

Raymond Huddleston, a 46-year-old unarmed black man, was one of the 74 black men who died in a police shooting in 2024. He was killed in a vehicle in St. Francisville, Louisiana, as per The Washington Post’s database for tracking fatal police shootings in America.

However, Louisiana State Police reported that Huddleston allegedly pretended to have a medical emergency while being transferred from Catahoula Correctional Center to a court in Baton Rouge. According to WBRZ, he feigned a seizure and assaulted guards who were assisting him. Subsequently, he managed to disarm an officer and tried to take control of the transport vehicle before being shot and killed by at least one additional officer, as reported by WBRZ. Huddleston, a registered sex offender, was en route to a court appearance for a domestic violence case.

Roshod Graham, a 30-year-old unarmed black man, has been identified as the second individual in the database. He tragically lost his life in Lauderhill, Florida. According to reports, Graham’s girlfriend sought refuge in a gas station convenience store and asked the clerk to protect her from him. In response, the clerk locked Graham out. In a fit of rage, Graham proceeded to repeatedly drive his vehicle into the building, forcefully ramming the door with his car. Upon the arrival of the police, Graham attempted to flee but was eventually apprehended. It is alleged that during the pursuit, he managed to seize an officer’s gun. This incident marks a devastating loss in the series of unarmed deaths.

The final entry in the database recounts the heartbreaking story of four-year-old Terrell Marshawn Miller, who was tragically killed in a residence in Macomb, Illinois. According to a law enforcement review, it was discovered that 57-year-old Anthony T. George had held a knife to Miller’s throat, resulting in the young child’s untimely demise.

“While still armed, the male suspect reached into a room, briefly disappearing out of sight of the officers before returning into view,” Macomb Police Chief Jeff Hamer told reporters, WGEM reported. “Fearing for their safety, the Macomb police officer discharged one round from their duty weapon, fatally striking the male suspect.”

The fatal gunshot claimed the lives of both George and, sadly, the young Miller, according to WGEM’s report. Among the cases in the database, some victims were neither armed nor unarmed. Out of the three listed as unarmed, one was reportedly attempting to grab an officer’s weapon, while the other was a convicted sex offender who had allegedly disarmed an officer and was allegedly trying to flee custody. Despite Biden’s efforts to attract black voters, his statements seemed to distort the truth and create a narrative that is not backed by data.
